Welcome back to Day 6 of the winter blogging challenge.
Today’s blog post is on the lessons learned from using social media.
I have learned a lot from using social media and in a previous post found here, I emphasized on using social media for good.
Social Media has changed the way we connect, interact, and communicate with one another.
Lesson 1| Social media for change
You can use your Social Media platforms positively for a cause and drive change. Social Media has over the years been the driver for many online protests, advocacy, and campaigns such as #Blacklivesmatter #metoo #sexforgrades #campusmetoo #enoughisenough #ClimateStrike #ClimateStrikeOnline
Globally, there has been an increase in domestic Violence, Rape, and Sexual assaults, which has caused an increase in deaths, assault, and psychological effects on women and girls.
In Nigeria, we have witnessed an increase in violence against women and girls as a result of the lockdown to stop the spread of the Covid-19.
Nigerians took to social media to call for change and declared a state of emergency on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Many joined online and offline protests. These protests have called for justice for survivors of GBV, increase to the punishment for rapist, the inclusion of sex education in the school’s curriculum and raised awareness on the issues of ‘Sexual Consent’, ‘Victim Blaming’, ‘Victim Shaming ‘, ‘Silence Culture’, ‘Support for survivors’ ‘Rape’ and ‘Rape Jokes’.
#JusticeForUwa, #JusticeForTina, #Justiceforjennifer, #Justiceforelizabeth, #JusticeforAda and #JusticeForBarakat
Lesson 2| Social Media is the new CV
Social Media is the new CV. Recruiters now almost always demand links to your social media accounts. Most Jobs, Internships, Scholarships, Fellowships, and Volunteering applications now demand social media accounts. Recruiters want to evaluate your digital footprint, to assess the kind of impact you have been having online. You can make some applications using your LinkedIn profile and it just automatically fills in your details.
You want to ensure you share useful content online, do not spread fake news, or cyberbully, anyone. Use for your platform for good.
